Austria´s position in European comparison
Total unemployment rate in European comparison
If calculated by the EU method, Austria´s unemployment rate was 4.2 % in 2011. Austria thus ranks first before the Netherlands (4.4%) and Luxembourg (4.8%) within the European Union. The unemployment rate of the EU-27 was 9.6% on average in 2011 and definitely above the Austrian ratio.
Youth unemployment rate in European comparison
If calculated by the EU method, Austria´s youth unemployment rate (for young people aged 15 to 24 years) was 8.3% in 2011 and thus clearly below the European average (EU-27) of 21.4%. Austria continues to rank second in Europe, only topped by the Netherlands (7.6%).
Long-term unemployment
The share of those out of work for more than 12 months in all unemployment individuals was 25.9% on an annual average for 2011 (+0.7 percentage points above the rate 2010). This ratio earns Austria the fifth place within the Union after Sweden (18.6%), Cyprus (20.9%), Finland (22.2%) and Denmark (24.4%), and and it is far below the EU-27 average of 42.9% for 2011.
Employment rate (of workers aged 15 to 64 years)
The 2011 annual average of the employment rate of workers aged 15 to 64 was 72.1% in Austria, i.e. slightly above the EU-27 average of 64.3%.
Employment rate (of people aged 55 to 64 years)
The employment rate of people aged 55 to 64 was 41,5% on average in 2011. This Austrian employment rate of older workers is below the employment rate of 47,4% of the EU-27.
Part-time employment rate
Austria´s part-time employment rate was 25.2% on average in 2011. This is 6.0 percentage points above the part-time employment rate of the EU-27 (19.5%). The part-time employment rate of women in Austria was 44.0% (EU-27: 32.1%) and clearly above that of men of 8.9% (EU-27: 9.0%).
